New Fabric Collection: Purl Soho’s Watercolor Linen
Like a painting, our new collection of Watercolor Linen seems made of fluid brushstrokes and colorful washes. It is subtle and elusive, intriguing and complex, earthy and beautiful.
The structure of Watercolor Linen is a simple plain weave, but with the warp one color and the weft another, the fabric seems to glow with an inner light. It shifts and transforms, each color a wonderful thing!
From serious Smoked Rose to playful Lemongrass, Watercolor Linen’s palette addresses every mood. It is often surprising, like when Wisteria Stem mixes lemony yellow with its complement, pale purple, to create a color that, instead of muddy, feels like the morning sun on a spring blossom.
Like its sister Handkerchief Linen, Watercolor Linen is crisp, cool, and lightweight. It is perfect for warm-weather garments, summertime quilts, napkins, tablecloths, and scarves.
The free pattern for our lovely Watercolor Linen Wrap is a great place to start. It makes use of the contrasting warp and weft threads with a frisky little fringe around all four sides. It is incredibly simple and totally gorgeous!
Watercolor Linen is available by-the-yard in a palette of 19 beautiful colors, ranging from warm peaches and pinks to cool grays. Pick your favorites!
Can’t decide? Watercolor Linen is also available in fat quarter bundles, just right for napkin sets, patchwork projects, and rainy days. A pack of 10 Fat Quarters includes just over half the palette in Moody or Bright bundles, and a pack of 19 Fat Quarters includes the entire spectrum of colors.

There seem to be different colors of linen available in the packs as compared to the fabric available as yardage. Am I right? Are those colors not available in longer lengths?

Thanks for writing us! The colors in the large Watercolor Linen bundle are the same as what we offer by the yard. We try our best to match the actual color to the color seen on the screen, but it is difficult because of many different variables.

The linen you make is it suittable for sewing clothes, and how much does it wrinkle?

Thanks for your question! Yes, this linen is suitable for making garments but might require a cotton lining for skirts or pants. The fabric wrinkles as with all linen, but this is a part of its beauty I believe. I hope you’ll like it!

I ordered it in Mountain Purple and I have to say it’s a stunning fabric – flawless milling, gorgeous hand (even freshly laundered and unpressed), ridiculously gorgeous to look at and a dream to work with. Whatever you make with this fabric will be of investment piece/heirloom quality. Will definitely be ordering more. The kids didn’t really need that college fund anyway…
I am thinking of making a summer quilt with this lovely fabric. Can you tell me how you care for it? Is it machine washable?

Great idea! The washing instructions for this lovely linen are to machine wash and dry. I have made several garments out of it and I machine wash cold and tumble dry low and the fabric is holding up like a champ!

I am looking to find a linen to use in making a quilt that will be both machine pieced and hand appliquéd. Do you think the Watercolor linen would be a good choice? Do you recommend pre-washing and machine drying before using them? Are swatches available (I’d like to see the color in person before ordering several yards).

Thanks for writing in! I think that this linen would be lovely for the project that you are envisioning! I have used it both for clothing and for small quilting projects and it works beautifully for both applications. We do recommend laundering the linen before sewing with it. I throw my yardage in the washing machine right after purchase and press it when dry.
