Receiving Blankets
Call it what you will… binky, boppie, lovey… every baby needs a good old-fashioned security blanket. Regardless of the season, it’s so nice to have a little something to snuggle! So for summer, we’ve whipped up a new lightweight version of our crochet-edged Flannel Receiving Blankets.
Nani Iro’s newest line of airy flannels are just right for cozy, warm weather receiving blankets. These whimsical prints also offer a good dose of sophistication, perfect for mom and baby! Edged in Koigu’s fingering weight Premium Merino, these cuddly keepsakes can be machine washed time and time again for long-loving use.

Materials
To make one 41-inch by 41-inch blanket:
- 1 1/4-yards Nani Iro’s airy flannels.
- 1 skein of Koigu’s Koigu Premium Merino (100% machine washable merino wool). I used colors 2229 and 1051.
- 1 US size A crochet hook
- 100% cotton thread. I used 1040.

What shades of the koigu did you use?

I'd like to make two of these and give as a set. I'm planning to order the coral and cream fuwari. Can you recommend a color in the koigu that would work well as a border on both, and will one skein be enough for two? Koigu has so many options and it's just so hard to tell online! Thanks in advance for any recommendation!
Hi Sam. I had a few girls at the shop help me with this, the consensus is that color 1043 (which is a blue-ish color) and 2132.5 (a green) would both be lovely. I don't think you can get two blankets out of one skein. You could get three blankets out of two skeins though. The recipient of these sure is lucky. What a sweet gift. –Laura

Hi lovely Purl Bee. Would you be able to direct me to a good US to mm crochet hook conversion chart? This gorgeous pattern says to use a size A hook and all the charts I can find start at size B (2mm). Or you could just tell me how big the size A is…

Thank you so much for writing in! A US size A crochet hook is usually around 1.75mm to 2.00mm. A US size B is 2.25mm. Often times, anything smaller than a B is only measured in mm, rather than given a letter size. For this project we recommend using as small a hook as you can so to minimize the punture holes in the flannel. As for recommending a good hook conversion chart, many needle gauges are great resources. I also recommend checking out Ravelry. If you have further questions please let us know!

So I see that the fabric used in this pattern is no longer available, and that you do currently have flannel. I am wondering though (as a beginner to sewing, knitter for years) what is it about the flannel that makes it a good choice? I am trying to find more whimsical, nursery friendly fabrics to make my version. Suggestions?

Sadly Nani Iro fabrics are only available for a very short time before news ones come out and old ones are retired. Our current Nani Iro fabrics are a brushed cotton that I think would work excellently for this pattern. We also do have flannel at the moment but none with any prints. I am in love with this project (and with a backlog of knitted baby items needed, something this quick but lovely would be amazing)!
I have a few questions. 🙂 Would the Nani Iro Double Gauze line that you have in stock now would work for this? Do you think that would be a nice weight for a summer baby blanket, or too light?
If OK :), I was thinking of making two – 1 with Suzuran Field, Chamonix Pink, JG10540-1B and 1 with and Pocho, Rose Bonbon, Aqua/Pink, JG10500-1F. Would the bright orange KPM-1280 work for both, and would 1 skein cover two blankets?
Would a poplin fabric work too? Reading through a few of your threads on this, sounds like any woven fabric would work, but would love your thoughts.

The new Nani Iro in the double gauze would be very nice. The colors are amazing and the weight is perfect against a baby’s skin and for those hot summer months. If you are making the same size 41 inch by 41 inch blanket as in the pattern you will want to get two skiens of the Koigu one for each blanket. The bright orange works with both also the hot pink kpm-1153 would also be good as well.
Any woven cotton fabric would work as long as it is breathable and lightweight.
