Reversible Hat + Reversible Cowl in New Colors
We’ve given our Reversible Hat and Reversible Cowl a color update! Dipping into this season’s Line Weight palette, these favorite old projects have brand new personalities: natural and woodsy, timeless and beautiful.
Our Reversible Cowl is a free pattern that makes use of Line Weight’s fine gauge to double the layers. We chose colors from our new collection of soft and tweedy Line Weight Heathers: Ginger Orange and Honey Pink. Like hot tea, autumn walks, and pumpkin patches, nothing could be toastier!
Our matching Reversible Hat is just as gorgeous in the classic combination of Wheat Flour and Tabby Gray (also Heather colors). Sized for everyone from babies to men, this pattern has you knit the first hat from the top down, then continue right into the second hat, bottom up. Tuck one inside the other, connect them with a little tassel, wear either side out, and never wish you had another hat!
We’re so happy that our new Line Weight colors have given us an excuse to revisit these oldies-but-goodies. They’re a wonderful duo that will carry you through winter with warmth and beauty! -Whitney

It is so beautiful that the most difficult is to choose colors because each color goes with any other. So I ordered 4 colors. Many thanks
Hello,
Thnak you for the beautiful patterns.
I plan to knit the cowl. Do I need to use US N°4 or US N°3 needles to knit the cowl?
You mention US N°4 circular needles in your material list. However, you instruct a provisioanl cast on on US N°3, but you do not instruct to swith needle size after the provisional cast-on.
Thanking you in advance for your reply,
Stephanie
Hi Stephanie,
Thank you for the question! For the hat you use a US3 and for the cowl you use a US4, so each pattern uses a different needle size. No changing needed! Best of luck!

Could you get a hat and cowl out of 2 skeins or would you need 4?
Hi Mary,
Great question! You should be able to get both a hat and a cowl out of two skeins. Our set together comes in at about 10% below the full yardage of the 2 skeins together. This bumper should allow for you to get both a cowl and a hat out of 2 skeins.
I hope that this helps and happy knitting!
Cassy
Will this yardage 497 yds. make both the cowl and the hat?
Hi Sarah,
The hat takes roughly 500 yards of yarn total. This only includes the hat. Thanks for the question!
-Adam
With the hat, you describe repeating the last 3 rounds. Could you please tell me exactly which three rounds to which you are referring? I section c at the top of the hat is what I’m wondering about.
Hi Sarah,
Thanks for writing in. In this part of the pattern you will knit two rounds and then do the decrease round. The two rounds plus the decrease round make up the three rounds you are supposed to repeat a certain amount of times. Hope this helps!
-Adam
Please confirm if my calculations are correct: two skeins of LW in two different colors will make the Reversible hat AND the Tiny Stripes hat. Right?
Hi Anne,
Thanks for writing in! You are correct! You should have enough yardage to make the 2 hats out of 2 skeins of Line Weight.
Happy knitting!

The reversible hat pattern is very good. But it is incomplete. After instructions for making the tasseks, it concludes cheerily: “you’re done !”. But you’re not. There should be instructions for anchoring the two tassels and finishing the hats, especially on a two-page pattern that costs $8.50 US.
Please complete the pattern!
Hi Sarah,
Thanks for writing in! The reason that we do not mention securing the tassel here is that as the tassel is made through the top of the hat, the act of making it secures it. Therefore there is no need to secure it after the tassel is finished being made.
I hope that this clears things up!

Hello, I would like to knit up this reversible cowl pattern for kids. However, I do not see where the pattern instructions indicate sizes for kids. Can you help me please?
And if I need to purchase the pattern I will.
Thank you
Marjorie
Hi Marjorie,
Thanks for reaching out! Unfortunately, although our Reversible Hat comes in multiple sizes, our Reversible Cowl only comes in one size intended for adults. For an easy kids version, I would suggest multiplying your desired cowl circumference by your stitches per inch to get your cast on number and omitting the shaping so it is just a simple tube.
Best of luck and happy knitting!
Julianna
Section A of hat: “Repeat last three rounds” Is that rounds 2,3,4 or 3,4,3?
Hello Kate,
Thank you for reaching out! When it says to repeat last three rounds it means that you will repeat the last three rounds that you just knit. In this case it looks like the last three stitches would be round 3 and then two rounds of straight knitting. I hope this helps and let us know if you have any further questions!
Happy knitting!

Hi!
By any chance, are you going to get the Line Weight Ginger Orange color back in stock? I have leftover of Trout Brown, which I really like to combine with something warm and rather bright (but not too orange) for a reversible hat for my son…
Thank you!
Yuliya
Hi Yuliya,
Thanks for writing in! I’m so sorry to say that Ginger Orange has been discontinued and will not be restocked. If Kiln Red is too bright for you, you might like Linen Quill in Fresh Nutmeg!
I hope that helps!
Julianna
Is there a way to not have the tassel?
Hello Cynthia,
Thank you for reaching out! The tassel is added after you have finished knitting your hat, so you can easily skip it.
Happy knitting!
-Marilla
Thank you!

The link to the PDF version of the pattern appears to be broken. I would love to be able to print a PDF version to have on the plane while I am knitting. Could you share this with me?
Hi Kelsey,
Thanks for reaching out. We’re no longer offering this pattern as a PDF download, but here’s how you can download it yourself!
If you’re on your computer, you’ll find a “print” icon in the right column just below the “Save To Favorites” button. If you’re on a mobile version of the site, you will find the “print” icon below the pattern and above the comments.
Click on this button, and a window will pop up where you can delete whichever parts of the pattern you don’t want to print. When you hover over any image or a text block, it will be highlighted in yellow and a “trash” icon will appear. Just click on this icon to delete anything that’s not necessary to the pattern! For example, you may decide to shorten the pattern by omitting certain images or the list of materials. Then, click on the “PDF” button in the upper left-hand corner of the pop-up window. Once your PDF has finished downloading, just click the “Download PDF” button, and it will be saved to your computer! (You can also click the “Print” button if you’d like to print the pattern.)
Hope this helps!
All the best,
Lili
Hi. I have just completed the Reversible Cowl. It was an enjoyable knit. I love the very detailed video tutorial on Kitchener Stitch. I struggled with that in my previous projects but it was smooth sailing when I joined the cast on stitches to the final round of the cowl.
Now I have a question. At the end of the Kitchener Stitch round, I noticed that there is a ‘hole’ between the beginning of Kitchener Stitch round and the end of the round.
Did I do anything wrong? Any help is very much appreciated.
Thanks
Sandra
Hi Sandra,
Thank you for writing in and we are so thrilled you have finished your cowl! As long as all the stitches have been accounted for in the Kitchener stitch join, you should be good to go. If the hole doesn’t resolve with blocking, you could use a short length of the yarn to sew the gap closed. I hope this helps!
Warmly,
Gavriella
