Hand sew, machine sew or both; use linen or metallic threads, neon or glow-in-the-dark embroidery flosses; applique prints into special zones (a Liberty of London floral in Hyde Park?); mark meaningful intersections and neighborhoods with embroidery stitches, buttons and trims; make it your own. Forget quilt blocks; think city blocks, and go to town!

Sure, but it won't be a quick project. The thing about this quilt is that it involves a lot of hand sewing or a lot of very careful machine quilting, Hand sewing will be easier but take a long time. The machine quilting takes a lot more experience so I'm not sure I'd recommend doing it for a first project.
The most important thing is that you like what you're making, so if you're drawn to this project I'd say to go ahead and give it a try!

I love this so much! What weight of batting do you suggest using?

If you are planning on hand quilting this we would suggest either the Request weight (the lightest cotton weight) or Dream Wool batting for a fluffier look. I’m planning on ordering some supplies for this quilt and was wondering which muslin you guys recommend using. Your 60 count or 200 count? Will one be thinner than the other and possibly see through?

Absolutely most wonderful idea for a quilt and the one of the night sky just great! – think: dark blue velvety cotton fabric, some smooth, small white or silvery beads and satin thread connecting those stars… then fall asleep under the stars!
Should I quilt this on a quilting frame to keep the fabric taut .

Thank you for your question! If you are going to use a quilting frame I recommend being very, very careful. The paper the pattern is printed on is quite delicate and could easily pull or rip from the frame. If you have further questions, please let us know!

Is it possible to pin my 36×42 pattern of Paris in the center of a twin size piece of fabric(with batting and backing) , and quilt this on my quilt frame? Do you have any pictures of any maps with quilted borders?

Thank you very much for writing in! You can totally pin this pattern to twin size piece of fabric. If you’re going to use a quilt frame I recommend being very, very gentle with your fabric. The pattern is printed on very delicate paper and could rip from the frame easily. Unfortuntaely, we don’t have any photos of any maps with quilted borders. Again, thank you for your comment!

I am having difficulty hiding my beginning and ending thread. Is it best to come up from the bottom and hide the stitches after I finish the quilt? Thank you Karen

Thank you for writing in! You are correct, you will want to come up from the bottom of the quilt when you begin stitching so that your beginning and end threads are underneath the quilt. If you want neater looking stitches on the back of the quilt I recommend leaving a tail of about 3 to 5 inches long. Then after working the embroidery or stitching you can weave that tail through the stitches on the back side of the fabric.
I also recommend checking out our WIndowpane Wholecloth Blanket project, it’s got some great suggestions for hand quilting.

What would be the best method to applique printed fabric? I’ve done the Constellation quilt and I know only too well how thin the printed paper is. Also, how do you cut the smaller shapes to applique?

Thanks for writing in! Appliquéing printed fabric is meticulous but the result is beautiful. We have a tutorial on Turned Edge Applique but there are also many resources on doing the “applique stitch”. If you are cutting out pieces from a printed fabric, you’ll want to do the “applique stitch since oblong shapes are difficult to turn under. I hope this helps!

I’ve purchased the large DIY constellation map and am having trouble finding fabric that is wide enough. Please forgive my ignorance (I am new to quilting), but the instructions say to purchase 2 yards at 72″ wide for the top and bottom of the sandwich respectively and I am only seeing fabric that is around 42-45″ wide. Am I supposed to hand quilt this in two parts and put them together? Won’t that leave a distracting seam? Thanks for your help and sorry for the silly question.

Thank you for writing us! This is a good point to bring up with the constellation quilt. The only fabric that we sell that would be wide enough is the Moda Muslin in 60×60 count or 200 count. Both come in a natural color and white. Otherwise, you’ll need to seam two panels together to get the necessary width. Though it would be visible, I don’t think it would be distracting.
